Nice race report. I just laughed my ass off for the last half-hour. That report was definitely through the eyes of a confused roadie.
I would agree my singlespeed friend if not ONE hard core mountain biker dropped from the event. I think out of 96, I can already tell you two for sure that did.

I have a hard time quitting too, but when it comes to muddy trails, it is a very good idea to quit. This is especially true here where it rarely rains. Any form of traffic ruins the trails for weeks or months, the mud ruins your bike, and crashing into trees can ruin your life. Continuing your war analogy, sometimes it is best to pull out to live to fight another day. It’s interesting that in this regard road cycling is more like football and mountain biking is more like baseball.
Well Graeme, that sounded like a hell of a mtb race. I’ve been in some tough ones myself, maybe not as grusome as the one you describe. But they can sure get ugly.

What a ride Graeme! Maybe you want to consider doing the Idabike now that you are schooled in moving at glacier speed through the wilderness? A wonerfull ending too. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, it did. Sometimes if you expect the worst, you will not be disappointed. I know this from personal expeience.
